I’m talking all things Fiji in this blog. I was here for 3 weeks in July 2013.
Frustrated with running low on travel money and with no jobs while in Australia a friend and I decided to go to Fiji! Just like anywhere else I’ve been we had no plans of what to do when there, except we knew it had to be cheaper than Australia!
We flew in to Nadi airport. Fiji is set up with 2 main islands – Viti Levu (where Nadi is) and Vanua Levu. There are lots of smaller islands around the main ones. We went to Mana and Beqa Islands and got Padi open water certified. Fiji is a great place for scuba diving and snorkelling. Shark diving is pretty popular in Beqa, we missed out though, because of bad weather at the time, the ocean was too choppy.
Fijian people are really friendly and fun. And most of them speak and understand English really well, making it easy to get by.
With few or no shops on the islands, things are bought on to the smaller islands by boats from the mainland. Being here makes you feel like you don’t need to buy things or be commercialised at all, you simply live with the basics. Nature and you. Coming from a country where the average 10yr old owns their own iPad and iPhone, it’s hard to imagine. Even getting any Wifi is rare on these islands.
I loved being here! It was hard to leave. Fiji is really just a piece of paradise and easily the best place I’ve ever been so far.
